Kevin Peirpoint, known as “Boss”, has become so famous that his work is now produced in Manchester and sold out. Like many of his contemporaries, he uses both traditional and modern methods. While ocher and bark preserve the authenticity of the work, canvases and acrylics are much easier to transport and are therefore in high demand.
Kevin, ‘Boss’ Pierpoint is a generous man willing to give of his time while quietly sharing his knowledge. I get informed:
“Indigenous art has become a ‘must have’ for European collectors and the Netherlands seems to be leading the way. Originally, Aboriginal artists painted with a reed. Men decorated totem poles and other objects made of wood, while women They traditionally painted on bark and made intricate weaving. Today the indigenous peoples are known for their dot art, but this phenomenon did not occur until the arrival of the missionaries with their slates and stilettos. The stiletto was used to draw on the ground and was thus created a new form of art.”
Leura, a charming town in the Blue Mountains, has an interesting gallery called ‘Ochre’. Exhibits include necklaces made from tiny red berries strung together, woven mats and wall hangings, totem poles and dilly bags, as well as coolamons. Textures and colors draw the unsuspecting window shopper inextricably into ‘dreaming’.
Gallery owner Judy travels thousands of miles, including flying in small planes to obtain original works. She is passionate about the well-being of people and passionate about art.
Arnhem Land held a special place for her as she had previously worked there as a nurse. Here, in an isolated region, she brings not only canvases and acrylic paints, but also hope and encouragement. A regional center has now been developed so that some 30 artists can work together. All the artists are photographed and paid a fair price for their work, which Judy brings to her gallery. She is justly proud of the people she represents and the art she sells.
