Happy Memorial Day: How You Can Have One Without Derailing Your Diet or Exercise Program

happy memorial day –

How are you staying true to your diet and exercise program this holiday weekend?

Memorial Day is a special time of year; for most of the country it is the final signal for summer to begin, although snow is known to fall in June. Last winter was one of the worst in generations and hopefully summer will produce some great weather.

More important than the mark on the calendar as summer begins, Memorial Day is a time of remembrance, as the holiday commemorates the men and women of the United States who died in military service.

There are many traditions surrounding Memorial Day. Some of them include: visiting a cemetery and memorials, volunteers placing flags on headstones in national cemeteries, many families having a barbecue, and the Indianapolis 500 taking place this weekend.

If you fly your flag, be sure to fly it only at half-staff from sunrise to noon local time. Another timely piece for Memorial Day is 3 pm local time, as it is set aside as a time to observe silence in memory of our fallen soldiers.

It’s important to stay true to your diet or exercise program over the holiday weekend. It may be that you need a break and a day or two of rest is fine, but you don’t want to lose momentum on your journey. You also don’t want poor food choices to turn back the dial on your weight scale. Be smart about meal and activity planning. Try not to sleep too much, although I can certainly appreciate the comfort of my own bed on a holiday weekend. Sleep is a very powerful drug and VERY overrated.

If you’re worried that your time with family or friends is going to sabotage your diet, speak up. Let your family know that some of the menu items they have grown accustomed to are simply not healthy. Make a change. You’ll be surprised how many of them will chime in and agree and contribute ideas for fresher food.

If necessary, leave early. If your family’s barbecue leads to heavy deserts, constant snacking around the bowl of chips, or binge drinking as the sun begins to set in the sky, then head home early. Who cares? You are on a journey; a fabulous weight loss journey. Don’t let a holiday weekend derail your success.

Have a strong vision of who you want to become. Let the vision empower you!
