A look at processors and camera features in the Nokia Lumia 900 and Galaxy S3

We compare Windows and Android mobile operating systems by reviewing the Nokia Lumia 900 and the Samsung Galaxy S3, the two leading devices on their respective platforms. Previously, we looked at how the models compared in terms of style and screen quality. We found that Nokia impressed us the most in terms of design, while Samsung had the upper hand in display performance. Now we see what the phones offer in terms of processing power and camera features.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the first quad-core mobile device launched by the manufacturer. The model runs on the fourth generation of the Exynos chipset, which includes an ARM CORTEX processor clocked at 1.4 Ghz. A Mali 400MP graphics processing unit is also included as part of this chipset. This configuration is without a doubt one of the fastest we have tested on an Android device. We found it faster than the Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset used to run many other Android devices. The four cores present in this phone are really beneficial when it comes to multitasking features. The Nokia Lumia 900 uses the same chipset as its sister model, the Lumia 800. This architecture includes a single-core Snapdragon Scorpion 1.4GHz APQ8055 processor chip and an Adreno 205 graphics processing unit. Chip speeds are the same in this phone and the Galaxy S3, the Samsung’s quad cores mean the device is better at handling multiple tasks at the same time. However, this is not a big problem for the Lumia 900, since the Windows operating system does not offer true multitasking. The platform puts background apps into hibernation, meaning single-core chips can still deliver exceptional speeds. Samsung offers the latest technology in this department, but in practice, both phones perform excellently.

The Nokia Lumia 900 has an excellent camera package capable of capturing photos and video footage. For still images, the phone can capture images at 8-megapixel resolution while video is recorded at 720P HD resolution. The still camera benefits from a high quality Carl Zeiss lens which is considered to be one of the leading lenses on the market. Image quality is excellent and there are a number of additional features to help consumers capture the best photos possible. A dual LED flash is ideal for dark conditions, while the video stabilization mode is excellent for producing smooth, easy-to-see images. The Samsung Galaxy S3 outshines its rival in camera features. The model features a 12-megapixel fixed camera that has 50 percent more resolution than the Nokia. Video images are also higher quality with the 1080P standard. The Samsung offers most of the extra features that are present in the Nokia and also a few more that not many phones have. These include the ability to record video and capture a photo at the same time and a smart burst mode that records 3 images per second.

There is no doubt that the Nokia Lumia 900 and the Samsung Galaxy S3 are two leading smartphones. When it comes to processing power and camera features, Samsung has the upper hand, although both models impress in both areas.
