Tips for prolonging the life of an ignition coil

The ignition coil is an important component of a car. It converts the energy of a few volts from the battery into up to 25 kv, which is essential for creating a spark to ignite the fuel. Optimal functionality of the ignition coil is affected by multiple factors. You can extend the coil life up to 80,000 km by following some tips. Read this article to learn more about how you can extend the life of your ignition coil.

The battery must be well charged
Make sure to charge the battery optimally. If it is below the optimum level, the workload on the coil is unlikely to create enough spark to ignite the fuel.

Check for oil leaks
Check for any damaged sealant. This condition can lead to oil leakage. Oil often damages the insulation on wires, exposing them. This causes sparks and rules out coil ignition.

Avoid moisture formation.
Watch for any breakage where the ignition coil is located. Be sure to seal such cracks with an adhesive. This prevents moisture from entering the system.

Avoid engine overheating
In summer the weather is hot and you may want to sit in your car with the air conditioning on. Running the air conditioner places an excessive workload on the engine. The engine component gets hotter and hotter. Unless heat is made easier to get out of the engine, it could cause overheating. This heat can reduce the life of the ignition coil.

vibration limit
Occasionally you may hear a knocking noise that is unusual. Such noise is an indication of damage to the part from which it came. If the noise becomes frequent, it will damage the case. It could also short the coil and ultimately fail.

Spark plug maintenance
Over time, spark plugs wear out due to workload. Replace the spark plugs as recommended by the manufacturer. While replacing the spark plugs, make sure the cylinder head threads and spark plug threads are free of moisture, dust, and debris. Be sure to follow coil maintenance as recommended by the manufacturer.

Proper maintenance of engine parts.
It is important that you take proper care of engine parts. For this, you must use engine oil of the correct grade and appropriate fuel. You should also replace the air filters, fuel injection pump, spark plugs and use the correct level of coolant (should be between ‘high’ and ‘low’).

Be sure to replace the belts (in the pulley drive) on the engine (replace at 80,000 km) and have the vehicle serviced by knowledgeable professionals. Also, for optimum fuel economy, inflate your tires to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure.
