Tips for buying second-hand clothes

WHAT: “Vintage.” “Recycling.” “Lately Worn”. All of these terms are ways of describing second-hand clothing. Tough economic times and growing concern for the environment have encouraged people to buy used clothing or donate it. Secondhand clothing can be found at various thrift stores, consignment stores, garage sales, and online with auction websites like eBay. Today, many used garments that are in good condition are waiting in stores for someone to notice them. For budget-conscious and environmentally conscious people, shopping for second-hand clothes can be both fun and challenging – you never know what surprises you’ll find! You may not find anything in your size that you like, but if you are lucky, you may find an item that is absolutely perfect for you, or better, a real treasure! In fact, a friend of mine bought what she thought was a cute purse at a garage sale for $15. Little did she know that it was a designer brand whose handbags typically cost several thousand dollars apiece and the appraised value of her second-hand treasure was close to a thousand dollars!

WHY: Second-hand clothing is cheaper, less likely to shrink, and is eco-friendly. By buying second-hand clothes, you give used clothes a second life and keep them out of landfills. In this age of eco-friendly choices, buying second-hand items is a great idea and can be especially beneficial for families on a budget. Some charities may run second-hand clothing stores and make money from the sale of clothing to help others. Buying second-hand clothes also gives you the opportunity to discover great clothes at a very low price, not to mention that there are different styles and sizes for everyone! You’ll be able to enjoy the thrill of the hunt, find unique items no one else will have, and help reduce textile waste in landfills.

WHAT:

• Check out yard sales, thrift stores, and consignment stores for secondhand clothing and other everyday items. Garage sales are great for finding cheap used clothing, and you can haggle over the price.
• When looking at thrift stores, look for labels you know and trust. Prices may be a little higher, especially if the garment has been well cared for, but the quality and reputation of the manufacturer guarantee a longer life.
• Sometimes luxury clothing for adults and children is donated to thrift stores. You can check stores near exclusive neighborhoods for new donations.
• Be sure to thoroughly check all items. Make sure all seams are tight and secure, especially around the collar, underarms, buttons, and zippers. Check for moth holes, loose stitches, and stretched necklines, armholes, and waistbands.
• Don’t waste time with piles and piles of clothes: it is time consuming and can be frustrating. Choose stores that organize clothing well enough that you can quickly and easily find what you need.
• Bring clothing that is too worn, torn, or stained to sell or donate to recycling centers.

TIP: Be sure to wash all newly purchased second-hand clothes before wearing them. When buying toys, you must disinfect them before giving them to your children. Blankets, sheets, and towels should also be thoroughly washed.
