How Turmeric is Measured in Western Science

For over 5,000 years, there has been a history of turmeric being an important part of healing among some of the world’s most respected alternative medicine leaders. Not easily convinced, the scientific community of the educated western world denies trial, error and real time testimony and these are not probative enough so they have to put them under the microscope and conduct a multitude of trials and clinical studies to be completely convinced.

Studies on turmeric began in the mid-19th century and have come a long way since then. Advances in the 20th century have led to some exciting revelations from this plant as they have progressed in chemical breakdowns and identifying the agents that turmeric has, and which agents have all the benefits for your health.

In a comparison, Western science has not only validated turmeric for use in ancient cultures, but has found that it helps combat many of the pandemic-like conditions facing the world today. There is confirmed study literature for the compound curcumin which contains the phytochemical called cucuminoids to help and treat conditions such as:

  • Diabetes
  • arthritis
  • obesity
  • Heart disease and more.

From this constantly published information, natural health scientists continually research and develop new and better ways to put it to better use.

One of the biggest targets in the past was poor absorbency and this was the reason to dismiss turmeric as the wonder spice it is today. It was found that to reap the rewards effectively we need a catalyst with turmeric to be absorbed into the bloodstream. The simplest and most common catalyst found to accomplish this is the chemical agent piperine found in black pepper.

Curcumin is found in the root of turmeric, and the leafy part of the plant has been found to contain a chemical called carotenoids. These carotenoids are also found in the human retina, making turmeric extract good for eye health and helping with conditions related to ocular macular degeneration.

The latest extensive study on the wonders of turmeric is related to alziemers disease. Although it is still very early days, turmeric is showing neuroregenerative properties and I am following these studies with great anticipation.

I believe we are still in the early stages of all the potential and revelation that can be achieved from this all-natural root. Science-led supplements have already made a lot of developments and offer some exciting alternatives in medicine.
