How to get rid of the smell of garlic




Garlic is easy to grow and can be grown year-round in temperate climates. In cool climates, cloves can be planted in the ground about six weeks before the ground freezes and harvested in late spring. Garlic plants are not attacked by pests. Instead, they suffer from pink root, a disease that stunts roots, turning them pink or red. Garlic plants can be grown close together, leaving enough room for the bulbs to mature, and they are easily grown in containers of sufficient depth.

A large number of sulfur compounds contribute to the smell and taste of garlic. Diallyl disulfide is believed to be an important component of the odor. Allicin has been found to be the compound most responsible for the “spicy” sensation of raw garlic. This chemical opens the thermo TRP (transient receptor potential) channels which are responsible for the sensation of burning heat in food. The cooking process of garlic removes allicin, thus softening its spiciness. Due to its strong odor, garlic is sometimes called the “stinking rose.”

* What works for onions also works for garlic. An easy way to remove these odors from your hands is to lather your hands and scrub them with a faucet or stainless steel knife. It really works, but it should be stainless steel that you are rubbing, and not any other metal.

How exactly does it work? It’s not really an exact science, but the theory goes that sulfur from onions, garlic, or fish would be attracted to and bond with one or more of the metals in the stainless steel.

* Remove the smell of garlic from a wooden cutting board by coating it with a thick paste made from baking soda and a little warm water. Let the mixture sit for 15 minutes and then rinse. Baking soda is also good for deodorizing garlic-scented hands, along with a little salt and water.

* Noxzema is another effective product for removing unwanted garlic odor from hands and body. It is a skin cleanser marketed by Procter & Gamble that contains camphor, menthol, and eucalyptus, among other ingredients.

Originally developed as a sunburn remedy, garlic is also effective as a cure for odors due to its list of odor-fighting, fragrant, and medicinal ingredients.
