Hard Water Stain Removal

Hard water refers to water that contains a high level of magnesium and calcium. When water repeatedly comes in contact with a surface, dissolved minerals form a buildup that gradually stains the surface. These surfaces can include sinks, bathtubs, showers, kitchen utensils, even shower doors, bathroom sinks, and virtually anywhere else that has a constant flow of water. This stain is called hard water stains and while not dangerous, it can cause permanent damage to certain surfaces and should be removed promptly if detected.

The question that most people ask is how they can remove ugly stains from their homes. The first solution is to use a cup of mixed lemon and vinegar solution. You should apply it to the affected area with a damp cloth and let it sit for a few minutes and then you can remove it and rinse it off. This solution should not be used on marble as the acid will etch the surface of the marble. Hard water stain cleaning can also be done with professional products. These cleaners can be used depending on the type of surface stained and the instructions given should always be followed.

But besides just cleaning and removing hard water stains, it’s good if you prevent your doors or windows from ever getting stained again. Frequently used areas should be cleaned with a mild detergent to remove any stains that may have started to form. You can also teach your kids to always dry the sinks after using them and also use lukewarm water to rinse such areas, after which you can blot them with a clean, dry cloth to ensure no mineral residue remains. Pay close attention primarily to drains and fill lines, as these, in most cases, have the greatest potential for staining. Water softeners can be purchased to be placed in water storage tanks as they turn hard water into soft water which prevents stains from coming back saving you a lot of trouble cleaning.
