God wants to use you

The book Hebrews was written for readers who knew very well the history of God’s involvement with his people. They knew the Old Testament and were familiar with the customs.

They probably also knew what role the high priest played at the time. The author wants to use the image of the high priest to refer to what Jesus came to do here on earth. However, because the author is concerned that readers will no longer remember what the role of the high priest was, he quickly summarizes what high priests used to do.

Let’s read it together:

1Every high priest selected to represent men and women before God and offer sacrifices for their sins should be able to graciously deal with their faults …

The high priest had an important job. It basically acted as a cushion between God and people. He had to kneel before God for the bad things the Israelites had done. He had to beg God not to punish the Israelites for the bad things they had done.

2… since he knows what it is from his own experience.

But the high priest also understood what the Israelites were going through. He couldn’t judge and rebuke them, because he too had feet of clay. He also slipped and fell. He knew how difficult it was to stand tall when the winds of temptation were blowing so hard.

3But that also means that you have to offer sacrifices for your own sins, as well as those of the people.

I really understand what this is all about as well. I know how much I fight. I know the stupid decisions that I have made. The movie of my life is also played repeatedly in front of my eyes, showing the places where I fell on my face. I see my sin and it makes me feel bad.

And then I wonder how God can appoint me to explain his Word to others.

I learned an important lesson from preacher Rick Warren. Every time he begins to preach, pray, “Father, forgive the sins of your preacher of your Word.” I pray this too, because I know my luggage.

Many use this as an excuse. Lord, do you know how much wrong I have done in my life? I can’t open my mouth.

But I have news for you. Just as God used the sinful high priest, as He uses sinful preachers, He wants to use you to be a light in the dark world.

At work, at home, in a hospital bed, on the farm or on the street, be God’s light in your own way. God uses crooked clubs to strike straight.

Holy Scripture

Hebrews 5: 1-6

Reflection

How much sin have you accumulated?

Do you think God wants to use you?

Where does God want to use you?

Pray

Father, I sin so much. I’m surprised you want to use me. But I am willing. Please give me the strength and wisdom to make a difference where You call me to do it and to be Your light in the dark. In the name of Jesus, amen.
