DIY Kitchen Cabinets: 3 Small Budget Options for Your Kitchen Remodeling Project

A DIY kitchen cabinet project is not rocket science. It’s a matter of being organized and having everything in place before you start. With a few good ideas and even a small budget, you can give your kitchen the look you want.

Give cabinet doors a makeover

Even on a small budget or no budget at all, with a little work you can turn some ugly old cabinet doors into something amazing. There’s a neat trick to painted cabinets: have you ever wondered what’s under all these coats of paint? Remove cabinet doors, hardware, and empty contents. Use a power sander and sand all the paint off the doors and frames.

You can find some beautiful wood under that paint. Get some small pine sticks and cut them into a rectangle to stick on the outside of the cabinet door. This will dramatically change the look of your cabinet doors. You can then apply multiple coats of lacquer or wood stain for a natural look.

The wood under the paint may not look good enough to be exposed, so there is another inexpensive option to solve this problem. To give the doors an even older look, paint the doors any color you like and sand the paint, but leave some color in the grain of the wood.

Be sure to run the sander the same way as the wood grain, from top to bottom, not right to left. Then you can also apply a lacquer to give them shine and protect them. Throw in some new hardware and door handles and you’ve got something very unique.

Replacing cabinet doors

If your old cabinet doors can’t be recycled, you can replace them and keep your cabinets as they are. There are many places to find inexpensive lumber that can really make great cabinets. Get a good set of plans first to help you figure out what you want and what you need. Then go to the step by step instructions and follow the blueprint.

Make sure you get the measurements right before cutting to avoid wasting wood. Plans can give you many simple ideas that don’t require expensive tools to make cabinet door designs. Then it will be your turn to paint, stain or apply lacquer. Remember not to leave the doors of your wardrobe in common wood to avoid stains from water, food and fingers.
