Within the Caribbean island chain, the island of Barbados is the easternmost island of them. Barbados stands alone, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other.

Made of limestone, the island of Barbados measures just 166 square miles, reaching 14 miles wide and 21 miles long. This wonderful little island is magnificently rich in culture and history. Full of beauty, this is an island of pure paradise!

The island of Barbados has only one high slope that goes by the name of Mount Hillaby. Other than that, Barbados is reasonably flat. Mount Hillaby is 1,089 feet above sea level.

The climate of the island of Barbados is quite stable and in winter it very rarely falls below 24 degrees C between December and March. In the summer the temperature stays around 30 degrees C or less between May and October. June through December is the usual time of the hurricane season. It can get very humid and uncomfortable during this time of year, but luckily the northeasterly trade winds give the islands a cool, light breeze for the rest of the year.

The official language of Barbados is English spoken with a Barbadian dialect. This can often be very difficult to understand! However, if you visit the island of Barbados on a few occasions, you will soon become familiar with ‘basic Bajan’ talk and it will start to make a lot more sense.

The island of Barbados has a population of about 270,000 people. The capital city of Barbados is Bridgetown, which is located on the southwest coast. There’s plenty to do in Bridgetown, from shopping to visiting the fascinating local museums and churches of historical interest. You can even choose to go to the horse races!
