Makeover your bedroom lighting

For those hours that you are awake, well-placed lighting is essential. A smart match is a better way to do it, because direct light in one place can be dazzling and unpleasant. For example: ambient lighting, such as elegant pendant or ceiling lights, and task lighting, such as a wall lamp or sconce. Here are some lighting tips for your bedroom.

• Pendant – A pendant lamp in the center of the room works as a strong centerpiece. It can add opulence to the room. An ornate chandelier gives it a more traditional or country-style feel.

It is important that a ceiling light is not too low above the bed. This should be taken into account if you have young children who might bounce off the bed. A shorter fixture or close to the ceiling is safer. Do not install lights directly on the pillows, so you should look directly at the fixture.

Add a dimmer for easy light control, or opt for soft lighting from table lamps if you like to watch TV in bed.

• Bedside lamps – A bedside lamp makes a style statement while providing light for reading. The matching lamps on both sides of the bed add balance to the master bedroom, but the different lamps add interest for a modern touch.

Readers need a table lamp that has easy flexibility. A light that can be rotated or that has a swing arm works well. Make sure it is well protected so your sleeping partner is not disturbed.

• Wall Lamps – If you prefer a neat look or if there isn’t enough room for a nightstand, wall-mounted lights work for reading. If two ceiling lights are aimed directly at both partners, you need separate switches. Make sure it is easily accessible when in bed to turn it on and off.

Lights used primarily for reading should be fully adjustable to direct the light right where you need it.

• Children’s bedroom lighting – When designing a children’s bedroom lighting plan, safety and sleep routines are critical. Ceiling lights are a safer option, especially for young children. Young children may also want a night light.

For older children, decorative table lamps can brighten the room. You can encourage your daughter to read before bed. Your desk will require a lot of lighting. It can be an adjustable wall lamp or a stable desk lamp attached to the top.

• Bonus tips: In a bedroom, switches should be considered. There is nothing more frustrating than getting out of bed to turn off the light. The separate switches for reading lights are convenient and make everyone happy.

Dimmers are a good idea in bedrooms, because no matter what the activity is, they allow you to select a comfort level.

Work or social media at night means task lighting. It can be a table lamp or a wall lamp. They are essential when using laptops, mobile phones or a tablet.
