How to remove a stain from travertine tiles

Travertine tile is made from a type of limestone. Its neutral tones of tan, white, and cream add classic appeal to your home. Because travertine is a natural stone and naturally porous, it absorbs stains into the stone rather than just affecting the surface. Removing travertine stains quickly before they can be absorbed is the best way to deal with them. If a stain is absorbed by the tile, you can still completely remove it by removing it.

Instructions

1. Absorb liquid from stain with paper towels. Remove as much of the surface as possible before working on the stain.

2. Mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water in a bucket. Moisten a sponge with the soapy solution before squeezing it out. Wipe the surface of your travertine tile to remove the surface stain.

3. For 1 cup of diatomaceous earth in a bowl. Mix enough of one of the following liquids to make a thick paste similar to peanut butter: water for grease stains, hydrogen peroxide for organic stains, ammonia for biological stains, and commercial rust remover for rust stains. Stir the two ingredients with a spoon.

4. Cover the stain site with the paste using a rubber spatula. Apply the paste so that it is at least 1/2 inch thick and extends past the edges of the stain. Place a piece of plastic wrap over the pasta.

5. Allow the paste to sit on your travertine tile until dry. Remove the plastic wrap and remove the dried paste with your spatula.

6. Dampen a clean cloth and wipe down the travertine tiles. Dry with another clean cloth.

Tips and Warnings

1. Cleaning travertine tiles with too much moisture can damage them. Always wring out your cleaning cloth or sponge.

2. A poultice can take up to 48 hours to dry and remove the stain. Keep the area closed so that children and pets cannot reach the poultice.

3. Avoid rubbing and scrubbing with the use of abrasive tools or cleaners, as all of these will damage your tiles.
