How to Convert Car Engines for Marine Use

Have you ever thought about converting your vehicle’s engine for marine use? If you have an older model vehicle that is not in good running condition but the engine still runs well and you are in a location close to water, converting your automatic engine to marine use will be a great option. But this conversion work is done by a professional who has a good background in marine applications, as well as experience associated with the use and performance of the engine. Upon conversion, other parts and accessories are widely available through the Marine Suppliers Online Store. Check out this basic step-by-step conversion procedure that can help you convert a car engine for marine use.

step by step procedure

Separate the exhaust headers from the vehicle’s engine with the appropriate tool. Remove and disassemble the carburetor. After that, you can now remove the pulley and the water pump from the engine. Then you will see the frozen lead at the base of the motor that you will have to remove and disconnect. You can now remove the engine mounts from the block.

Install the heat exchangers, water-cooled exhaust manifolds, and exhaust manifold gasket. At the front of the engine, connect the seawater pump. Then connect the hoses from the heat exchanger to the water pump. In the boat’s engine compartment, install a thru-hull seawater intake, remaining hoses, and water filter.

On water-cooled headers, connect the exhaust pipes together with the necessary clamps and gaskets. Once the engine is installed on the boat, you can connect the remaining parts of the exhaust.

Check carburetor and disconnect fuel line fittings. Then connect the gas tank, fuel pump fittings, marine fittings set up for the rigid line or you can also use an aircraft rated fuel line as long as they are set up prior to marine use once the engine is installed . Having a 1 or 2 fuel filter will be great for the fuel delivery system.

Also for the carburetor, modify the intake manifold with tilt shims to fit nicely and make sure there is no room for air to get through. As the bow of the boat rises, the shims act as a guide so the carburetor stays level.

On the intake manifold, fit the carburetor flame arresters. Reattach the carburetor to the intake manifold. Before adjustments, modify the throttle connection to the boat’s throttle control and cables.

On the engine block, install the brass freezer and fix the marine engine to be mounted on the engine block. Now you can fill your engine crankcase with the appropriate, high-quality marine engine oil. Lastly, in the engine compartment, install external oil filters for the fuel system.
