3 smart ideas on how to reuse an old vacuum cleaner

Have you ever thought about what you are going to do with your vacuum cleaner once it has reached its expiration date? You can’t hide it in the attic or throw it in the landfill. Other people have put their old vacuum cleaner to good use. Sure you can do the same.

I collected some ideas and here are some of the smartest ones:

1 hovercraft

This is a vehicle with air suspension. These are often used for water travel. You can make a toy hovercraft that can be used for leisure during the summer seasons. You need the blower outlet from your vacuum or your Shopvac. You also need plywood, plastic sheeting, small plastic disc bolts, and wood screws. Also prepare the tools like drill, electric saber saw, duct tape and staple gun.

Make a disk out of the plywood. Some people use square plywood, but you can always try round plywood to avoid splintering your skin on the sharp edges of square plywood.

Measure the center of the disk and drill a hole about 5/16 inch in size. This will allow a 2-inch bolt to easily slide in. Also make a hole the size of your vacuum’s blower. Trace first in pencil so you can accurately cut out the hole. This will prevent leaks.

Now make the plastic sheet. Lay the circular plywood on top of a large sheet of plastic. Wrap the edges of the plastic around the disc. Use your staple gun to fasten the sheet to the plywood. Take a discarded coffee can lid and drill a hold in the center. Attach it to the bottom of the hovercraft.

Use a sharp knife and cut out six escape holes. They should all be uniform 2-inch sizes. Flip the hovercraft over to the other side. The plastic sheet should be at the bottom of the floor. Put the hose of your vacuum cleaner in the hole and turn it on. It should already inflate and slide.

2. Backpack bug catcher

You don’t have to hire pest controllers as you can make the machine that will eliminate the bugs in your home. Buy a durable bag made of plastic or a rigid bag. Drill a hole in the side of the bag and install the suction part of the vacuum machine.

3. Use accessories as cleaning material

You can simply use the discarded accessories as hand tools for cleaning. Remove the roller brush and use it to clean rugs or small rugs.
