Essential need for water

Dehydration

Americans love our coffee, soda, iced tea, bottled fruit juice, and Kool-aid (not to mention wine, beer, and liquor), but few people drink enough water to keep their bodies healthy. As a San Diego chiropractor, I often see patients who are dehydrated yet completely unaware of the fact.

It’s easy to forget, when we order our soda for lunch or dinner, that our bodies are created to be nourished by water. In fact, the body is made up of 60 to 70 percent water. We all know that blood is primarily water, but muscles, lungs, and brain also contain large amounts of water.

Drinking water helps the body in many ways. Here are just a few:

Regulates body temperature

It provides the means for nutrients to travel to the organs.

Oxygen to cells is transported.

Eliminate waste

Provides protection for joints and organs.

Disease prevention

During the hustle and bustle of a busy day, taking the time to drink water is often the last on our priority list. And yet it can be the key to preventing many common ailments that can affect us, such as back pain, joint and muscle pain, allergies, headaches and fatigue. People who are chronically dehydrated often suffer from numerous illnesses, due to the fact that without water, toxins cannot be easily removed from our body.

Disprove the fallacies

It is a common fallacy that you only need water when you are thirsty. The truth is that your body needs water whether you are thirsty or not. It is a fact that some people have been in a state of dehydration for so long that the body has simply turned off its thirst reflex. That’s a pretty scary thought.

The fact is, your body can tell you in many other ways, besides simply thirsty, that you are lacking hydration. A body that is in optimal health will have a normal desire for water. And those who drink water regularly find that they are more in tune with their own body’s signals.

Another common fallacy is that the body is actually getting enough “water” through the other fluids consumed throughout the day. The truth is, while many of the liquids listed above contain water, they also contain other substances that work against what the water is trying to do. For example, coffee and tea are diuretics. This means that they cause the water to leave your body too quickly, before it can achieve what it is designed to do.

So how much water intake is enough? You may have heard that a person needs 8 glasses of water a day. This is a good rule of thumb. A closer calculation is to calculate a half ounce per pound of body weight.

Water purity

Those concerned about the purity of the water that comes from the tap, there is a wide range of water filters now available on the market. These range from the small ones that fit in a pitcher of water, to the filters that fit on the faucet, to the units that install under the sink.

Another aspect of water is the pH levels. Due to ingesting many toxins found in food and the air around us, our bodies become very acidic. This can be balanced by drinking water that is known as “alkaline” water. Alkaline (or ionized) water helps balance the body’s pH. Basically this means that more life-giving oxygen is carried into the body and distributed through the blood system. Oxygen is especially important in fighting and destroying cancer cells at the first appearance.

Creating alkaline water can be accomplished by using water ionizers on the kitchen counter. Additionally, a commercial product is also available in powder and capsule form as a nutritional supplement. By taking this extra step to get extra oxygen into your system, you may enjoy higher energy levels and experience fewer sick days.

Replenish or deteriorate?

Our bodies lose approximately 6 liters of water a day simply through functions such as perspiration and elimination. When this water is not easily replaced, the body goes into the deterioration process that results in an environment where diseases thrive.

It will help keep your body in tip-top shape while drinking adequate amounts of water for your weight. So see how much better you feel when you are totally in tune with your body’s needs!
