Artistic value in video games

I’ve wanted to talk about this for some time, but couldn’t find the words to express my point of view. I have seen articles and news stories over the years about how school shootings and violent children are caused by violent video games. There is no real evidence or research to back it up, but I can’t get mad about this. They say that they are just child’s play, they dismiss it and say that there is nothing positive that comes out of the games. Every generation people find something to blame for children’s misbehavior. People would blame books, art, movies, music, and right now, video games are on the sidelines. All media and art forms go through this before being known for the value they place on society. Games allow you to experience the creativity that can be drawn from all forms of art. You are the one who drives the story that could have been read from a page, you make the decisions that the actor is directed to make, you experience the landscape that could be seen from a painting, and you are the one who experiences the music that is created for the game. All of these types of art combine to make an experience that, if done correctly, can last forever with people.

I remember playing a game called Fallout 3 and they gave me a choice. He could disarm a bomb for a city for a coin or blow up the bomb, along with the city, for more coins. Ever since I made the decision to save the city the last time I played, I decided to see how the game would change if the bomb went off. After the explosion I went back to visit the place where the city was. There was only one survivor. She had no idea that I blew up the city and was still gleeful, just thankful that I got out on time. Now I know it only survived because it offers missions in the game, but that moment stuck with me. This lonely girl who had been physically altered due to the explosion and radiation. Never before had he experienced such strong regret before this moment. I wanted to go back to a previous save, but couldn’t. I sat for a while and looked at the screen looking at what my actions had caused and at that moment I was playing more than a game. I was experiencing something different. Something that I have never experienced before. Games can be more than just child’s play or something to kill time. It can express creativity and emotion like any other great work of art.
